Any club is only as strong as its members and our swimming club is no exception. In Ross Martin we have an individual who has dedicated himself faithfully since first joining over 23 years ago in January 1985. I am sure a lot of you will recall that Ross celebrated his 40th Birthday at the club presentation and disco evening on February 2nd.
Unlike most men, dare I say, approaching middle age Ross not only continues to swim for the club but continues to set records for the men’s open events. So far this year Ross has set two new club records for the 200m and 400m freestyle. Furthermore he came out on top in what will almost certainly be the year’s most exciting race.
The event was the 1500m at the LASA age groups on March 15th. Most times in these distance events one individual pulls away and the race is over long before the final touch. However this time Ross and Adam Trussler (Penguins SC) remained tied in a perfectly matched pace for nearly 58 of the 60 lengths. The difference came about 5m out from the last turn. Adam seemed focused on the turn and did not notice as Ross to put in a kick that took him in to the turn 1m ahead. Carrying the extra speed through the turn this lead extended to 3m by the time both swimmers were back in full stroke. At this point Adam seemed to notice that Ross was in front and kicked to try and make up the lost yardage. Each stroke took Adam closer to Ross but Ross managed to dig in again and was able to take the winners spot by a mere 0.24s in a time of 18.13.73. In so doing Ross not only won the men’s 1500m open but also became the oldest ever Leicestershire county champion .
With dedication and club members like Ross Martin setting this kind of example for the younger swimmers the club can only go from strength to strength. Well done Ross!
